Barcelona, 30 de marzo de 2022. The company specializing in the development and manufacture of electric vehicles, QEV Technologies, leading the Decarbonization Hub of Zona Franca de Barcelona, presented this morning the new ZEROID brand, a fleet of 100% electric vehicles.

ZEROID marks the beginning of the reindustrialization of the former Nissan plants in Barcelona, and production is expected to start in early 2023 with a volume of 60.000 vehicles per year. ZEROID enters the market as a leading brand of sustainable vehicles and electric platforms for fleets and urban services and strengthens QEV Tech’s role as a national reference company in urban electric mobility.

The manufacture of the vehicles, which will be carried out at the Decarbonization Hub (D-Hub) in Barcelona, will be the first of the projects to reindustrialize Nissan’s three plants. By 2023, the estimated production of manufactured eVans is expected to be 5.400 units and eBuses between 100 and 200 units. “Our three-year goal is to produce more than 60.000 units per year and generate more than 1.000 jobs in 3 years”, says Orús, CEO of QEV Technologies. And adds: “We don’t want to and cannot let all the human capital in Zona Franca go to waste. They are the real value of reindustrialization, neither the facilities nor the machinery. The Nissan workforce has a lot of valuable knonwledge, a lot of experience, and a lot to contribute, and we are convinced that they have a lot to contribute to the company’s success”.

At the presentation of ZEROID, organized at the Nissan Brand Centre in Barcelona, and attended by the Director General of Industry of the Generalitat de Catalunya and CEO of ACCIÓ, Natàlia Mas, among other personalities, Joan Orús stressed that “the brand comes to occupy a space in the mobility market in urban transport. We are betting on this plant to move the industrialization line and bring to Spain the electric platforms for 8 and 12-meter buses and start with last-mile van platforms”. ZEROID’s zero-emission fleet includes three models of electric vans, delivery trucks, and electric and hydrogen platforms for buses and heavy trucks.

QEV Technologies’ bet to settle in the D-Hub is to manufacture and assemble “in situ” most of the production, relying on local companies to boost the local economy. “A great oportunity arose to reindustrialize an area with an automotive history in the surrondings of Barcelona. The automotive sector plays a strategic role in the Catalan and Spanish economy”, said Joan Orús, who also stated that local industry should be encouraged, not only for environmental reasons but also because it is necessary to start reducing transport costs and at the same time reduce our great dependence on other countries.

ZEROID, which is currently being developed in QEV Technologies’ facilities in Barcelona, next to the Circuit de Catalunya, is planning to move in the coming months to the D-Hub plant and ensures the preservation of the national business fabric, as well as the creatin of new jobs and business for the Spanish industrial sector.

The implementation of ZEROID at the D-Hub will be a boost for the automotive industry in Spain with the creation of an ecosystem of innovation in electromobility that will attract major investments and will transform the country’s mobility sustainably, thus accelerating the implementation of Industry 4.0.
